A suitable option for dinner! In this recipe, you will learn how to cook curry rice to surprise your family. Carefully follow the steps of the recipe, and everything will turn out in the best way! It will be delicious.
What do we need to cook rice?
You need to use basmati rice for this, but you can replace it with long-grain white rice if you like. Be sure to use white rice (brown rice takes longer to cook, and you won’t get the same yellow color). Furthermore, don’t use rice that is easy to cook, or you won’t get that nice fluffy rice texture.

Spices for food, sold in every supermarket, and are not specific. Therefore, you will not have any problems with them. So, when you have all the ingredients ready, let’s start cooking.
- Soften the chopped onion in a saucepan with a little oil and butter.
- Add the spices (cumin seeds, cardamom pods, cloves, and turmeric) and a couple of bay leaves before adding the rice.
- Add the boiling water to the pot, then stir, cover and cook on VERY SLOW for 20 minutes.
As you can see, the recipe is basic, its complexity is below average. The only caution is that after you have added the rice and mixed it with the spices, you should add boiling water, not cold water.
Add to this dish a light chicken curry or a spicy beef curry – and your dinner will take place in an unforgettable atmosphere of Indian cuisine.

Easy rice recipes

This Indian restaurant-style rice with a mild, aromatic flavor takes just 5 minutes longer to cook than regular parboiled rice.
Ingredients
- Vegetable oil – 1 tsp.
- Butter – 2 tsp.
- Onion – 1 pc. (small)
- Cumin – ½ tsp.
- Cardamom – 6 pcs. (*see notes)
- Cloves – 6 pcs.
- Turmeric – 2 tsp.
- Bay leaf – 2 pcs.
- Basmati rice – 300 gr.
- Water – 600 ml.
Instructions
Heat the oil and butter in a saucepan until the butter melts.
Add the onion and cook over medium heat for 5 minutes until softened.
Add cumin seeds, cardamom pods, cloves, turmeric and bay leaves. Heat while stirring for another minute.
Add the rice and toss to coat with the spices. Boil the water separately in another vessel.
Add the boiling water, stir once, and bring to a boil again.
Then put the lid on the pan and reduce the heat to very low (use the lowest heat if cooking with gas, or setting 5 (of 10) for induction). Cook for 20 minutes.
After cooking, turn off the heat. Leave the lid on for a few minutes, then remove the lid, fluff the rice with a fork and serve. Cardamom and bay leaves can be discarded.
Bon appétit!
Notes
*Cardamom – Sew the cardamom pods together unpainted thread. This makes it much easier to find and catch them at the end.
