The first time we went to a restaurant on the island of Crete, we, of course, ordered a Greek salad. Surprised that the salad was served without dressing. Deciding that it should be so, the salad was eaten with fragrant lamb, as it was served. And only during the second visit to the restaurant, the waiter explained to us that all the ingredients for salad dressing are specially placed on the table. And each visitor does it to his own taste.
Greek salad ingredients
Greek salad is naturally gluten-free (although you can experiment, for example by adding crispy croutons or croutons) and usually combines fresh ingredients such as crunchy cucumbers, tomatoes, sweet bell peppers, red onions, olives and feta cheese.
A simple dressing of lemon, olive oil and garlic will make every bite unforgettable. This salad is a staple not only in Greece, but throughout the Mediterranean region.
Best Greek salad dressing
Greek Salad Dressing is delicious and quick to make (virtually any time of year) – you’ll want to add it to all your salads! The ingredients for the Mediterranean dressing are basic, but each ingredient is important, so be sure to use:
- Freshly squeezed lemon juice (not from concentrate)
- Good extra virgin olive oil
- Fresh garlic (not powder or pre-minced garlic)
After mixing all the ingredients in a handy glass, add salt and black pepper to taste and shake well to combine them. If you are preparing a salad for yourself, then of course you can dress it right away and eat it. Also, the order of adding the ingredients and their layout is not mandatory.
If you want to make a presentation for your guests, then dress the salad only immediately before serving. The ingredients nicely laid out on the dish and the fragrant dressing will impress your guests.
Some interesting facts about Greek salad:
Any cheese feta, is suitable for Greek salad. But goat’s milk feta cheese will give a creamier and lighter taste.
It is not necessary to cut the cheese, usually it can be simply crushed manually. It will not affect the taste.
Add the dressing only before serving, whether it is for you or for guests. Salt in the dressing will cause the salad to wilt.
To make the salad crisp, wash the romaine lettuce leaves under cold water and dry them completely with a salad dryer. Then cool.

Greek salad recipe

This Greek salad recipe is worth a try. It is probably one of the healthiest salads, it does not contain gluten, but only fragrant raw vegetables, a drop of cheese and aromatic natural dressing. Try it - it's delicious!
Ingredients
Greek salad ingredients
- Romaine salad - 1 head
- Red onion (medium) - 1/2, thinly sliced
- Bulgarian pepper - 1/2
- Cherry tomatoes - 1 cup
- Cucumber - 1 pc., sliced
- Avocado - 1 pc., pitted and sliced
- Olives - 1/2 cup, sliced into thirds
- Feta cheese - 100 gr.
Ingredients for dressing:
- Olive oil, extra virgin - 3 tbsp. l,
- Lemon juice - 3 tbsp. l. (from 1 large lemon)
- Garlic - 1 clove, pressed or finely minced
- Sea salt - 1/2 tsp.
- Black pepper - 1/4 tsp.
Instructions
Wash, cut and dry the romaine lettuce and transfer to a large salad bowl.
Add the rest of the salad ingredients to the bowl: thinly sliced red onion, chopped bell pepper, halved tomatoes, diced cucumber.
Cut the avocado in half, remove the skin, remove the pits, and cut into pieces.
Olives, remove the pits (but it is better to buy immediately without pits), cut into thirds.
Cut feta cheese into cubes. Although this is not a matter of principle, but rather a matter of personal taste. Some prefer simply hand-shredded cheese.
Add olives and feta cheese to the rest of the ingredients.
Meanwhile, put the bowl with the salad aside and prepare the dressing for it.
Mix lemon juice and olive oil in a glass (I advise you to use only virgin olive oil). Squeeze the garlic or chop it very finely, salt and pepper. It is advisable to mix all the ingredients in a jar with a screw cap. After adding all the ingredients, close tightly and shake well so that all the components of the dressing are combined.
Immediately before serving the Greek salad to the table, pour it with dressing, to taste and mix thoroughly.
Your salad is ready, the incredible flavor of the dressing with vegetables will appeal to any gourmet.
Bon appétit!
Notes
You can replace Romaine salad with another leafy salad: Iceberg, Frisé, Lollo Bionda.
